Should you create a product or service first

Featured Replies

I want to stop trading time for money. But creating a product takes months with no revenue. Services pay now but trap me in delivery. Which should I build first?

Service first. Product later. You need to understand the problem before you productize the solution. Most failed products come from people who never served the customer directly.

@DerekNoBS I created a product first. It failed. Then I offered the same thing as a service. It worked. Then I productized the service. The product succeeded the second time because I understood the customer journey.

@Marcus Chen That is the exact path I took. Product failed. Service worked. Productized the service. Now the product sells itself because it was born from real client work.

@Marcus Chen @SamC C How long did the service phase last before you productized? I am worried about getting stuck in service mode forever.

@HannahK One year. I needed ten clients to see the patterns. Less than that and I would have productized the wrong thing. More than that and I would have been too comfortable to change.

@Marcus Chen One year of service before productizing. That is my new timeline. I have been at six months. Six more to go. Then I build the product based on what I learned. Thank you for the specific number.

Product or service, I prefer services since I like dealing with clients. But more important is your noche you are going after. I Tested 3 niches in 18 months. The one that stuck? The one where clients already had budget allocated. Demand > passion. Goodluck!
