From freelancer to agency. Was it worth the stress or should I stay small

Featured Replies

I have been a solo freelancer for four years. I am getting pressure to grow into an agency. More clients, more revenue, more headaches. For those who made the leap, was it worth it or should I stay small and raise my prices instead?

I went agency and regretted it. The margins were worse than my solo work. I downsized back to a premium solo practice and made more money with less stress. Bigger is not always better.

I love having a small team. Two contractors, not employees. It gives me leverage without the legal complexity. Agency does not have to mean twenty people.

I stayed small and raised prices. Now I work with three clients at a time and make what I used to make with ten. The math of premium positioning beats the math of volume.

I feel like everyone is telling me to scale. But staying small and charging more sounds way less stressful. How do you even find clients willing to pay premium rates?

I never considered it as a freelancer. I figured if I ever got into a position where work was too much to handle, I would just scale back. I feel like a lot of people think they NEED to expand but if you can sustain growth and revenue, and you don't really need to expand as you a financially set... Why would you risk it? I know I wouldn't.
