I’m thinking about building a web based bioinformatics data visualization tool, but I’ve heard researchers aren’t always comfortable uploading their data online. Is there a way to work around that, and is this concern increasing or decreasing?

Big biotech and pharma companies already use internal web based tools for analysis and visualization, usually built in house and deployed through intranets.

A lot of researchers will publicly show their studies and findings online. There are entire websites just for this that allow you to look at thousands of studies stretching over several decades.

Companies are investing in these tools, but for individual researchers it’s often impractical because of privacy, scale, and the fact that people prefer running analysis locally where the data already is.
