What would you do differently in your first year of business

Featured Replies

If you could go back to year one, what is the one thing you would change? Not general advice. Specific mistake you made that cost you time or money. I am in my first year and trying to avoid the obvious traps.

I would have niched down six months earlier. I spent a year serving everyone and burned out. The moment I focused, everything got easier. Marketing, delivery, pricing. Everything.

I would have charged more from day one. Underpricing attracts nightmare clients who demand the most and pay the least. Higher prices filter for better people. The work is the same.

I would have built my email list before my product. I launched to crickets because I had no audience. The product was good. The distribution was zero. Audience first. Product second.

I am making all three of these mistakes right now. Underpricing, serving everyone, building product before audience. This thread feels like a time machine. Which one would you fix first if you could only choose one?

@Jenna_T Niche first. Everything else follows. When you know who you serve, pricing becomes obvious, products become clear, and audience building has direction. Niche is the foundation.

The laptop lifestyle is real but it's not pretty. I'm writing this from a Bali cafe with terrible WiFi and a deadline in 2 hours.
