A lot of people tend to lose interest when they aren't gaining anything from it. So make sure even though you aren't getting ad revenue, you are gaining something else out of the work you are putting in!

Ads are not needed to grow a website. You don't need to pull people into it but it does help. I would say that if you are going to run ads for your website, focus them on platforms like Facebook that allow you to target in on your niche.
