Is it worth getting multiple domains for redirects?

Featured Replies

I have heard of people doing this and many of the big companies have. They will buy the misspelled URL as well as other domains.

So for example, they will have WEBSITE.com, WEBSITE.net, etc. or variations of misspelled words. I know if you go to Twitter.com, for the longest time it redirected you to X. This makes sense to keep it.

What category or niche does it fall under? I think it depends on that mostly. Like for social accounts like the one you mentioned, it makes sense. I think this also made more sense back in the day or only when a big company changes names. I am not entirely sure it matters so much for smaller businesses or websites.

You could end up spending a lot of money doing this. Some domains are quite expensive depending on the words used and these prices seem to go up year after year. I personally wouldn't do this because the way the internet works now, everything auto-corrects.

I considered this awhile ago for my sites and even back then, everyone agreed it is not worth it in most cases.

So I never bothered with it and saved the money. It would have cost me a lot more to buy all the domains I would have needed.

This. If you are not running a big site or have to worry about being sniped by a copy-cat, then I don't think it is really worth it anymore. There is no real value in this unless you have to worry about things that typically only effect large traffic model websites.

I did this before and I found it to be helpful at first but eventually, it didn't even matter. Today though, like others have said, it doesn't make a difference. I would only recommend it if you bought a domain/site recently and rebranded/named it.

Thanks everyone. After reading the replies here and doing a bit more research, I have decided against it. I think everyone is right about it just being a waste. I guess my brain still is stuck in the old ways of the internet and stuff that worked or was worth it 15 to 20 years ago mostly doesn't matter now.

I mean some stuff still holds up. Like e-mail lists and focusing on keywords. That has not changed at all but yes, things like multiple domains for redirects don't matter much anymore!
